ROBERT GREGORIO

According to the California Highway Patrol, an 18-year-old male was driving a Ford Taurus southbound on Otay Lakes Road when he struck the motorcyclist. Investigators said the teen crossed the double yellow line at a turn and overcorrected, striking and killing the motorcyclist who was coming in the opposite way.
Officials are investigating to determine if the driver is a U.S. citizen.
“His only form of identification he had on him was a photo ID and an educational ID from Mexico,” said CHP spokesman Brian Pennings. “He gave us a Los Angeles address, though.”
The car’s driver suffered minor injuries and will face numerous charges, said officials.

The identity of a motorcyclist killed Thursday in a crash on Otay Lakes Road has been released.
The victim was identified as retired San Diego police Officer Sgt. Robert Gregorio.
An 18-year-old driver crashed into Gregorio’s motorcycle Thursday, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Border patrol agents began chasing the 18-year-old motorist after receiving a tip of illegal immigrant activity in the area, NBC7/39 reported.
Agents had pulled off the chase shortly before the accident.
The driver did not have a valid driver’s license, police said.
